ADOPTION PROCESS

By law, the Dothan Animal Shelter must keep strays in the facility for seven days before they become eligible for adoption. However, pets turned in by a previous owner are immediately eligible for adoption into a new home.

All of our adoptable pets are listed with photographs on
Petfinder.com. Petfinder.com is a website used by shelters and other adoption agencies nationally in order to assist individuals looking for a new pet or even a lost pet.

The Dothan Animal Shelter is open Monday - Friday and the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 am - 4 pm.

Save-A-Pet also conducts dog and puppy adoptions at Petsmart every Saturday . Many of our cats and kittens are available for adoption 7 days a week in the Petsmart Love Center.

When you adopt a shelter animal, you are rescuing a homeless pet.  Due to the high number of pets we work to home, SAVE-A-PET can make no explicit or implicit guarantee as to the health or temperament of the rescued pet.  We strongly recommend that you take your new pet to your veterinarian as soon as possible.  The animal may appear healthy and still be incubating an illness.  Kenneth cough (canine) and upper respiratory infections (feline), for example, are very contagious and common illnesses in shelter animals.  Signs to look for include:  dry hacking cough, discharge from the nose and/or eyes, fever and lack of appetite.  If your new pet exhibits any of these symptoms. Please see your veterinarian right away.  This condition is very treatable but can become life-threatening, if left untreated.

Save-A-Pet is proud to offer two different adoption plans.

                           BANFIELD WELLNESS PLAN

Under the Banfield plan, the Save A Pet adoption fee is waived and Banfield waives it's $99 membership fee.  The $21.95 initially paid towards the Banfield Wellness Plan is applied towards one month's installment of $21.95 per month for a puppy/kitten;  or $16.95 (and up depending on the plan selected) for an adult for one year. This monthly payment is drafted directly from the adopter's checking or ATM account and will automatically renew at the end of the year unless specifically cancelled. Puppies/kittens should be younger than 6 months upon enrollment. Physical exams, vaccinations, de-worming, parasite prevention, spay/neuter (for puppies/kittens only), heartworm tests, complete organ function screen and routine checkups are covered under the Banfield Wellness Plan. This is an excellent economical choice for a new puppy or kitten, and is highly recommended by Save A Pet. (The Banfield Clinic is located inside Petsmart)

                                                         SAVE-A-PET PLAN

The Save A Pet adoption fee is $45. This adoption fee includes the spay or neuter of your pet.  An appointment will be set for this procedure at the time of adoption.

                                TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Save A Pet, Inc. requires that all companion animals adopted through the organization be spayed or neutered within 30 days of the adoption. Failure to alter the pet, in accordance with these terms and conditions, gives Save-A-Pet, Inc. the right to revoke the adoption and reclaim the pet, and your adoption fee will not be refunded. The adoption application is your receipt for the adoption.

                    TRAINING/BEHAVIOR ISSUES

All too often pets are received in shelters across the country due to training and behavior issues owners feel they are unable and/or unwilling to deal with. The Dothan Animal Shelter is not an exception. Often a pet's tendencies to chew, jump, bark, dig, run away, or act in an aggressive manner lead owners to surrender their pets, many times to animal shelters. Thankfully, Save A Pet is able to provide several volunteers trained in such behavioral difficulties to work with owners and their pets in an attempt to reconcile many of these problems in order to prevent surrendering the pet. If you or someone you know is having trouble with a pet, please consider this option before giving your pet away. Different pets have different personalities, and one's approach to certain issues may make a complete difference between that problem pet and a beloved best friend!
